Purpose of this document
The following document will provide you with information to access and place content like podcasts on the CKGI.ca web site.

Intended Reader
This document is intended as orientation for new programmers adding content to our web site.

Contact
To contact Gabriola Radio please email us at stnmgr at ckgi.ca or by phone 250-247-9891.

System requirements
Computer, Internet connection and web browser – Linux, PC or Mac works just fine.

If you have any  trouble accessing  the site, please let us know, include some information on what you were doing and when the problem occurred.

Some earlier web browsers work but don’t include all features (ie. text formatting options). The current version of Firefox on an Apple G4 – 466 MHz running 10.4 Tiger works great. If you have a computer older then that and can use the web site, please let us know, we’ll add it to the  list.

Cascading  Style Sheets
This is the overall look of the site is under the control of our designer Lance. You can alter many things (like fonts, colors etc) in your posts using html markup tags. If you don’t know what that is and want to alter the look of your posts, contact us.

Accessing the site
To view the site just visit CKGI.ca. Adding content requires a password. We will provide training for community members wanting to contribute.  The way to get started is by attending a meeting or contacting us.

Podcast sizes
Files sizes are limited on CKGI.ca to 2 Mb. If your show is longer then that you’ll need to access a file server. Voices.com lists places for hosting. The station has some limited resources and can provide access if required. There are many ways to upload files, the fastest and most secure is by using an ftp client program like fetch or freeftp.

Comments
Any visitor can add comments when the comments have been made accessible. If comments need to be approved they won’t show up until  that is done by an administrator.

Using the content additions area of CKGI.ca
You will need a password to access these areas of the web site. We have many levels of access that control various areas of the web site. The administrator will provide you with  the necessary access to the web site that you require. If you want to do more, just ask. Roles for wordpress are explained here http://codex.wordpress.org/Roles_and_Capabilities#Author

After logging in to the web site you will see the Dashboard page when you click site admin. On the left hand side below the word Dashboard are the following areas:

Posts
Posts are set to act like blogs. As we add to them they archive as older posts. Posts can be searched and will display when the search criteria are met.

Posts have 4 important areas
1) Edit – to change existing posts (more on the edit function below)
2) Add new – to start a post
3) Post tags – used to organize posts, tags are keywords people will use when searching the site.
4) Categories – another feature used to organize the posts.

Media Library
You can upload often used images and audio files here.  Remember the 2 Mb limit,  larger files will require hosting at another location.

Pages
Pages look and act like any web page you might come across. As content is added they will continue to display until removed.  Add pictures and sound files as you wish.
1) Edit – to change existing pages (more on the edit function below).
2) Add new – adding a page will also create a link to the page in the left navigation area (under about, music, etc…).

The Editor
You can edit your post or page just like a word processor – be sure to click publish when finished
Add images by clicking the square icon beside the words upload/insert. The three other icons are for other types of media – don’t worry about those for now.
Add podcast to any page or post by typing the url of the podcast file in the field at the bottom titled Podcast Episode.

Work flow
You will  need to decide if your show should be on a page or presented as a post. NCRC sessions are posts also use the tag NCRC. Long running shows will generally need to be on a page for ease of use,  nested from the appropriate page (ie. spoken word or music). Occasional special event shows should tend toward the posts area. Remember to complete the information on the podcast and meta data where appropriate.
For now use posts for podcasts.
1) create podcast, upload and note url
2) log in to ckgi.ca, add new post
3) select category
4) add tags
5) add title
6) add description or “plug” the show
7) link to podcast url
8) your done, relax and plan your next show.
