NewOldMedia Presents Its Premier Podcast Program Series:

“Voices From the Salish Sea” Podcast Program Intro. (click!)

“Voices From the Salish Sea” is an interactive customer/listener program series intended to increase awareness of, and discourse about the required components of “Healthy, Prosperous and Sustainable Community”. Although I have an outline that suggests several series, it is you, who will determine the direction and depth of our dialogue.  And, I welcome those of you who want to produce your own series within this overall theme!

Please see http://www.CKGI.ca and subscribe to our podcast play-list.
You are welcome to interact with our offerings by commenting here, at CKGI.ca “Spoken Word”, to my email, or via my website. In future, we will have “live” discourse on the subject matter.

All material from NewOldMedia is “in the public interest and in the public domain” and yours to freely download and share with others. Attribution credits and details at http://sealoverslane.shawwebspace.ca/

Please take a look at my website for more information about who I am and my skills and experience history. I am an integrator, investigator, inventor, interviewer and an instigator of social change – a typical Gabriolan!

My “rough” framework, presented below, is an extension of the paradigm “Nature, People and Business In Harmony” for “Healthy, Prosperous and Sustainable Community”. The current series plan is:

1. Restoring Democracy – Episode 1 “is on the air” with Elizabeth May
a companion piece “Laugh or Cry” is appended to Episode 1.
2. Restorative Justice and Conflict Resolution – Episode 1 (in production) We will look at Creative Conflict and Creative Shame, both are too often seen as negative experiences rather than opportunities to learn and grow.

3. Restoring Wellness – Curing Our Health Care System – root causes and cures

4. Restoring Our Beaches And Climate Change – Post Carbon Economy

5.  Emergency 24/7 Communications Support – The Role of CKGI 98.7 FM

6.  Interactive Community Radio Theatre – new media, social network, “live”

7. Business Planning Workshop – the dream, the potential, the pitch

8. Personal Financial Planning Workshop – “after interest and taxes”

9. Retirement Options for Living – Our Parents and Us – Having Fun.

Each episode will include expert comment, issues, alternative solutions and will be open to an ongoing dialogue with you. Each series will include as many episodes as required to satisfy your interest.

This entire program is “in the public interest and in the public domain”. That is, you can do pretty much whatever you like with it – with care.

Remember, there will be as many series and episodes within each series as there is a demand for participation by our customer audience.

So, jump right in and make your ideas felt as we explore the ways and means to achieve “healthy, prosperous and sustainable community”.

Thanks for listening. This is John Hague speaking.

Podcast Series 1, Episodes 1 and 1(a)

Restoring Democracy With Elizabeth May – Podcast Series 1, Episode 1 (click!)

Our first “Restoring Democracy” series will begin with a recent interview with Elizabeth May, discussing her new book “Losing Confidence: Power, Politics and the Crisis in Canadian Democracy”.

Elizabeth gives first hand accounts of the concentration of power in the Prime Minister’s Office and the devastating effect this is having on Ministers of Government, Government Back Benchers as well as Members of the Loyal Opposition.

She goes on to describe a non-partisan, generic framework for change that includes electoral reform, elected coalitions, cooperative governance and much more.

The program is about ten minutes long and represents about one third of the actual recorded interview. Follow-on episodes will be produced depending upon demand.

So, listen and respond, participate in the Restoration of Democracy in Canada. We deserve it!

Laugh or Cry Podcast – series 1, episode 1(a) (click!)_

Laugh or Cry is a 4 minute history of our world from 1962 to 2012. It is a companion piece to “Restoring Democracy with Elizabeth May”.

Podcast Series 2, Episode 1  (IN PRODUCTION)

Restoring Justice – With Creative Conflict, Creative Shame

This series is intended to explore the recent reinvention of “interest based negotiation” and “restorative justice”. These dispute resolution and alternative justice approaches have been part of civilization for hundreds of years, but fell into disuse some 300 or so years ago as judicial processes became more formal and took over what once were community based participatory methods for settling disputes and addressing criminal behavior. Much was lost with the changes particularly the ability of individuals to make their own decisions as to how they wanted to resolve disputes and redress criminal harm.

Thankfully, today you can use these methods either on your own, in conjunction with a mediator or through community justice forums. There are excellent training resources available if you want to pursue mediation as a profession or just to gain a deeper understanding of the who, how and why of it. My purpose in this series is to help you gain a basic grasp of creative conflict and creative shame along with some skills and interpersonal tools you might want to use on a daily basis. This series will also help you appreciate the role of mediators and community justice facilitators who are specifically trained to assist individuals achieve the goals of interest based negotiation.

I discovered these alternative dispute resolution processes during my time working on the staff of the BC Utilities Commission. While there, I became deeply involved and committed to public participation in regulatory proceedings. I took the full menu of conflict resolution courses at the Justice Institute of BC and did a practicum with the “Small Claims Court Mediation Program”. More recently I completed training with the Nanaimo, John Howard Society’s “Community Justice Forum”. This offering of restorative justice draws on aboriginal community experience from Australia, New Zealand and Canada blended with developmental work by the RCMP. These BC organizations have created and offer “best practice” applications of these key approaches to alternative ways of resolving both civil and criminal disputes without the long delays and costs associated with the usual justice system.

People are at the center of these processes, and their deeply held values and needs are of primary concern and it is to prevent and cure harm at that level that all practitioners are dedicated. Unlike the usual justice and regulatory systems, these processes are non-adversarial. It is not a “zero sum” game we play, rather it is “everybody wins” in a cooperative, personal search for resolutions that meet needs and heal harm and foster learning.

I look forward to sharing the basic elements of these processes with you, and I am very much looking forward to you sharing your thoughts and questions with me. To reach me, please email at newoldmedia@yahoo.com

A fundamental key to success with these processes is that all information is shared in strictest confidence. I will respect your confidential information and will address your questions only in a generic way. I am not offering personal service in this manner, but only a community service. If you need personal help please contact the Justice Institute of BC or the Attorney General’s Office of BC or the Arbitration and Mediation Institute or the John Howard Society. These organizations have, among other services, lists of qualified mediators in family law, commercial law, injury claims, contracts, insurance and other specialties. If you or someone you know is involved with a matter under the criminal code, the RCMP can be of great assistance in helping you understand the different approaches depending upon the age of the alleged offender and the nature of the offense.

And so, thanks to CKGI for hosting what I hope will prove to be a useful service to you whether you have a current need or are seeking information.

I will be using this site’s blogging facility to document the text of the podcasts in the series.

Thanks for listening! And stay tuned for our next episode “Creative Conflict”.
