Dear Sir/Madam,
How are you?
Good so far, but I haven’t had coffee yet, and we may not serve it at the conference…
I am very new to community radio. I am about to start volunteer work with UVic CFUV 101.9 FM. I am very interested to attend the conference. I an wondering if there are any volunteer opportunities?
Volunteers may signup for NCRC2010 to be held at Camp Miriam June 6th to 13th. To indicate what volunteering you want to do complete the registration form available at http://www.ckgi.ca/ncrc-2010/ . Your volunteers times will be confirmed with you at check in for the conference by using a sign up sheet. Volunteer positions are limited, it is best to register early. Kathy is responsible for volunteer assignment and will be available at the registration table, she tells me volunteers can expect to do 4 hours minimum.
also I have few general question:
Is there child care available for on site?
Yes. Parents must indicate sessions they are attending while using our Care Centre. You may not leave children with us unless the Care Centre knows where you are and can easily contact you.
Is it possible to stay at Camp Miriam and how much it will cost to sleep at Camp Miriam?
Delegates of the conference and their family may stay at Camp Miriam. Spouses and children pay the member rate.
$20 per person, per night for tenting. Tents will be next to the soccer field. Conference Soccer is planned for Saturday, June 12th sometime after 11 am. so if you are staying for the extra weekend let us know prior to picking a tent spot.
$25 per person, per night for a shared camping cabins, holds up to 10 beds. Let us know if you are bringing children and staying in a camping cabin as some of the cabins are smaller. Private cabins are available for a higher fee.
Family members must be delegates to attend the conference events. If they want to attend just the entertainment there will be a pass for sale, granting access to the off and on site performance events.
Do volunteer get any discounts?
Volunteers of NCRA member stations do receive a discount at national conference. Delegates fees and accommodations are reduced for NCRA members station’s volunteers. Conference fees are $35 per day.
Volunteers of the conference do receive free wifi at Camp Miriam. We will extend the wifi service to the Folklife Mall for conference volunteers.
Additionally, moderators and session facilitators will receive a gratuity. Presenters including board members attending plenary, receive that day waiving of delegates fees (ie. – admission to the conference). The hosting station will cover the venue and technical costs for the presentation at a session. We are still taking session presentation proposals, along with requests for sessions till April 28th.
How much it would cost me extra to stay if I bring my spouse along?
Spouses pay the discounted members’ rates for camping ($20 or $25 per day) and attending the conference ($35 per day per person) if they desire. The conference comes with meals ( breakfast and lunch). For supper you may use the kitchen facilities at Camp Miriam or visit one of the restaurants in the area.
The swimming pool, showers, washrooms and kitchen facilities in the evening are open to spouses and families of delegates camping at the conference. There are a ton of beautiful hikes in the area, remember Camp Miriam is a camp. Shopping is long walk but nice hike. We will have volunteers from our local tourism centre present at the reception table, on the first day of the conference (Monday) to provide more info on the Island’s amenities.
Is there wifi on Gabriola?
wifi is planned for the conference site, YES. David is working on site lines to place wifi at Camp Miriam.
Additionally we operate a wifi service, by donation, in Artworks at the Folklife mall. There is a public service free in the other mall across the street as well. The Silva Bay marina offers wifi for sale.
Our concern with the conference site is throughput. ADSL is not ava at this location which means we are limited to Shaw’s cable service. Quality of Service issues may occur when the plenary audio stream is running. We are anticipating the problem and looking at solutions.

hi,
i’m hoping to attend, with some others from victoria, the ncrc conference on gabriola this summer. i have a couple of questions:
1. how many beds are in each cabin?
camping cabins come in a variety of sizes and hold 1, 2, 8, 9 or 10 beds
2. i have a hammock rather than a tent — would i be able to hang it somewhere?
Gabriola is a large forested island. We can’t see the trees because we have so many of them. as to your specific needs I can’t say anything but likely.
if i decide to sleep in the hammock (and that’s possible), would there be a secure place to leave my stuff overnight?
Actually the entire camp is not secure as there are no private rooms for delegates. Many stations are bringing expensive audio gear for us to demonstrate at the conference as part of the sessions, those items will be in a locked area not available to delegates. Best not to bring anything you don’t want to replace. Rain is possible, we live in a rain forest. I’d say no one will take clothing left under a tarp in a bag with a bike lock attached to a tree, but I don’t know your clothing.
3. about food …. i understand that breakfast and lunch will be provided, we’re on our own for dinner, is that correct? will there be vegan options?
Delegates may share use of the Camp Kitchen for supper and during the extra weekend. As to meat we are only planning one meal with meat, that will be on the Friday at the Gala and that will likely be wild salmon or local beef.
“Vegan options” is not really a fair question as there are always options which includes meat (see wiki). Please be more specific with dietary questions. You’ll find Gabriola quite enlightened when it comes to food.
We are currently taking applications for a camp cook, any suggestions will be accepted. The gig pays.
Please consider the environment before printing this message:)

walking distance to camp Miriam from the ferry? Also, I haven’t received confirmation of my registration, do I assume I have a spot?
