Music Director Panel – How to build and maintain a Digital Music Library

PURPOSE:

Attendees will have an idea of what systems (software and hardware) can be used for digital music storage and be able to choose a system that suits their station’s needs and budget.

WHO IT’S FOR:

  • Librarians working with digital libraries or looking to implement digital libraries
  • Music directors working with digital submission process and digital libraries or interested in accepting and using digital submissions
  • Tech-guys and tech-girls at stations with digital libraries in place that need some improvements or want to implement a system
  • Stations with no digital libraries in place that are looking to implement one

Some understanding of computer system and databases will help you get the most from this session.

OVERVIEW:

Music-brarians unite to discuss the logistics of setting up and maintaining a digital library system. Whether you have a digital library implemented or are just getting started this panel is for you. Find out the logistics of setting up a digital library including the use of a local area network, the kinds of storage available (ie RAID), performing backups and preventing corruption. On the logistics side we’ll make sure to talk about methods used in organizing a digital library to ensure fast search times while maintaining ease of use and how these systems might be integrated into current setups so that a song played digitally can be smoothly transitioned into a song on CD, tape or vinyl.

We will also discuss whether it is possible to keep up with digital submissions and how we can to do that. We’ll discuss current software that can be implemented so that DJs will not be afraid to play digital tunes along with the cost, benefits and pitfalls.

If you’re interested in the legal and logistical side of digital music please attend “Moving To Digital: The Legality and Preparing For The Future

Music Director Panel – Moving To Digital: The Legality and Preparing for the Future

PURPOSE:

Participants will come up with a vision and plan of action for receiving, maintaining and using digital music at their stations.

WHO IT’S FOR:

  • Music directors and station members dealing with promoters, copyright laws, streaming and podcasting.
  • The staff dealing with capital expenditures at the station.

OVERVIEW:

We can’t deny that the industry is moving to digital and labels won’t keep exclusively sending us physical formats forever, but this raises some important questions and concerns. Some of these concerns include the multitude of submissions we may get given the ease with which promoters and artists can send out in-numerous copies of an album. Another concern is how (digital) music libraries are going to grow very quickly.

  • What methods are used to moderate music that comes in digital formats?
  • What legal issues are we going to face having libraries in digital format?
  • Does digital mean more work for stations’ music directors and DJs?
  • What do we want when we receive music digitally?
  • What are our primary concerns ?
  • What does the future and the present look like and how do we prepare?

This panel will not cover the technical aspects of a digital library.  The panel on how to build and maintain a digital library will explore that.
