Two Shows, One night – Friday, January 1st, 2010
Cover the World
followed by  Under the Covers

Live at the HavenLive at the Haven

We are hosting our bi annual fundraiser January 1, 2010 billed as Cover The World with GoodnessLive at the Haven followed by the Blue Lounge show Under the Covers at the Surf. Cover The World show will be an all ages variety show format. Following the Haven show we will again host The Blue Lounge presenting Under the Covers at the Surf.

There’s one other thing known for sure: the entire show is likely to be sold out.  This is the fourth fundraiser for CKGI, and every one has been sold out.

The Blue Lounge at TheSurfThe Blue Lounge at The Surf

“We’ve billed it as the Blue Lounge, Under the Covers adult variety show,” says Zakreski.  It’s a bit risqué, a bit lewd, a bit lascivious.  “It gives performers the chance to do things they can’t ordinarily do.”  Doors open at 9 p.m, and the show runs from 10 to midnight.

It immediately follows the night’s first show, Cover the World, a family-oriented presentation where the list of performers includes Tina Jones and Dinah D, Lou Gradanti, Victor Anthony and Kathy McIntyre.  There’s Miles Black and the Pearly Whites, and even a mother-son combination,: Barb Ebbeson and Spencer Symington.  And of course there’s Antony Holland and his mystery act, a challenge for the organizers and technical crews who will be recording the show for release as a CD.

“We’re going to be pushing the envelope,” says Zakreski.  “I asked Antony what he was planning, and he said, ‘I’m going to do something you can’t do on radio.’”

Whatever it is, it’s bound to be memorable.  Antony Holland has been an actor, and a teacher of actors, for more than sixty years.  A playwright and director as well, he is known around the world.  “You’ve got this big well to draw from,” says Zakreski.  “If Antony Holland can come up with it, it’s going to be different.”

That’s a feeling shared by Kathy Ramsey, a director of the Radio Society.  “Antony will be moving the boundaries of theatre and radio with his performance,” she says.  “We already have the technical people preparing for it.  Everyone has to see this show.”

Tickets for both of the New Year’s Day shows are available at Artworks, and at Falconer Books in Nanaimo, $15 for either show or $25 for both.  Admittance to Under the Covers is restricted to people 19 and older.

Cover the World With Goodness will be held at the Haven’s Phoenix Theatre.  Doors open at 6 p.m., January 1, and the show runs from 7 to 9 .

Under the Covers will be held at the Heritage Hall at the Surf.  Doors open at 9 p.m.

Proceeds from both shows go to CKGI, now in the process of finding a home on the radio dial.

“The artists on Gabriola have been very supportive with their time for our new community radio initiative,” says Zakreski.  “While we are waiting for Ottawa to sort out the situation, we really appreciate this effort.”

Tell It! – Lyrics

Tell It! (The Gabriola Co-op Radio Song)

1.

Well, you can tell it to me now

Or you can tell it to me later

or you can wait a month of sundays

when the suspense will be greater

You can tell it on the solstice

Or a stormy Equinox

you can tell me wearing leather

Or only wearing socks

And you can tell it to me softly,

Sweet and low

Just tell me you heard it on Gabriola Co-op Radio!

2.

You can tell it on the ferry

On a sultry afternoon

You can tell it in the evening

While we’re gazing at the moon

You can catch me in the village

Buying duct tape and wine

Or you can tell it while we’re dancin

With the herons keeping time

And you can tell it to me softly,

Sweet and low

Just tell me you heard it on Gabriola Co-op Radio!

3.

You can use formal logic

or get all sentimental

You can tell it to me mainstream

Or try something experimental

You can write a dissertation

or create an epic tome

you can extemporize and analyze

‘til the cows come home

or you can tell it to me softly,

Sweet and low

Just tell me you heard it on Gabriola Co-op Radio!

4.

You can fax it, phone it, e-mail it,

Text message it, too

You can stick it in an envelope

And put it in your shoe

You can package it up and send it

Overnight express

You can even send it to the wrong person

At the wrong address

Or you can tell it to me softly

Sweet and low

Just tell me you heard it on Gabriola Co-op Radio!

5.

You can sing it, tap it, rhyme it, rap it

At a local poetry slam

Or you can take a chance with interpretive dance

And try it out at the jam

You can cop the gist of a ventriloquist

Or juggle it like a clown

Or you can spend your time trying to mime it

When there’s no one else around

Or you can tell it to me softly,

Sweet and low

Just tell me you heard it on Gabriola Co-op Radio!

6.

You can paint it, print it, macramé it

carve it into wood

you can brand, batik, or lithograph it

that’s if you’re really good

you can highlight it, sky write it,

draw it in the sand

or get out your black “Sharpie”

and use the back of your hand

Or you can tell it to me softly,

Sweet and low

Just tell me you heard it on Gabriola Co-op Radio!

7.

You can shout it with pride

or you can act all humble

you can bark it, bitch it, gripe it, moan it,

whine or grumble.

You can scream it with passion

You can coo it with desire

Or you can teach it and preach it, brother

with your soul on fire!!

Or you can tell it to me softly,

Sweet and low,

(Everybody!) Just tell me you heard it on Gabriola

Co-op Radio!
